Devin Dyson is an American computer scientist and web developer based in Boston, Massachusetts. He is the founder and product lead of Moodlog, LLC, an artificial-intelligence journaling company,[1] the founder of Plotflow, an independent pen-plotter studio, and the developer of MiG, a vocabulary-training application for learners of Russian.[2]

Dyson studied engineering through the Project Lead The Way curriculum in high school and rowed competitively before being recruited to Ithaca College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 2016. He received a Master of Science in Computer Science from Boston University in May 2026, with interests in affective computing and natural language processing.[3]

Dyson began his career in product management and commodities brokerage before running operations for the Digital Currency Initiative at the MIT Media Lab from 2022 to 2024.[4] A solo founder, he began building Moodlog in October 2025 — carrying it from user research to a production platform end to end — and established Moodlog, LLC on January 1, 2026, self-funding the company without venture capital.[1]

Dyson completed the Ironman 70.3 Maine in 2019 — his first triathlon, opening with a 1.2-mile open-water swim[5] — and is a two-time finisher of the Philadelphia Marathon, which he first ran in 2015 and completed again in 2017.[6]

Early life and education[edit]

Dyson grew up in Connecticut. In high school he studied engineering through the Project Lead The Way curriculum — an experience he credits to the teacher who ran the program — and received its award for Excellence in Engineering and Design.[7] Before college he rowed for three years at the Saugatuck Rowing Club.[8]

Education

Dyson was recruited to row at Ithaca College, where he competed for four years. He entered as a physics major on a 3–2 engineering track before changing course to business, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in International Business (2012–2016).[3]

The return came a decade later: in 2024 Dyson enrolled in the Master of Science in Computer Science program at Boston University, completing the degree in May 2026 with a focus on affective computing and natural language processing — while concurrently holding a student job in the university mailroom.[3]

Business career[edit]

Early career

Dyson began his career in 2017 at Mamiya America Corporation, where he was promoted from marketing project manager to product manager within three months, co-managing five brands and leading a product-data cloud migration.[3] In 2018 he worked as an oil broker at Belmont Energy, managing brokerage operations covering more than $10 million in transactions and building custom spreadsheet tooling to automate Colonial Pipeline shipping-schedule analysis.[3] From 2019 to 2022 he worked at Boston University as a student accounting specialist.[3]

MIT Media Lab

From May 2022 to January 2024, Dyson served as Administrative Assistant II at the Digital Currency Initiative (DCI), the MIT Media Lab's cryptocurrency and distributed-ledger research group, running operations for its director and a sixteen-person research team.[4] He managed the group's weekly global research seminar, hosting presenters from academia, industry, and central banks, and organized the ACM Advances in Financial Technologies conference for more than 200 attendees.[3] Dyson has described his goal in the role as fostering a sense of community and interdisciplinary research among the group's students and researchers.

Moodlog

Dyson began building Moodlog, an AI-powered emotional-intelligence journaling platform, in October 2025, and established Moodlog, LLC on January 1, 2026.[1] After a 34-respondent user study, he reframed the product's thesis from clinical habit-tracking to emotional-insight extraction: users write freely, and the platform reads each entry and tags the feelings it finds, surfacing emotions, people, and patterns over time.[1] The system pairs a fine-tuned RoBERTa emotion model with named-entity recognition to map entries across Plutchik's eight primary emotions.[3]

A solo founder, Dyson built Moodlog end to end — research, model, infrastructure, and business model. He recruited a clinical and technical advisory board and filed a federal trademark application for the brand.[3] The service, positioned as "built for insight, not diagnosis" and private by default, is invite-only as of mid-2026.[1]

MiG

MiG is a native iOS application, written in Swift, that trains vocabulary for learners of Russian through speed-reading drills built for rapid word recognition. It ships with more than 1,500 curated words spanning CEFR levels A1 to B1, and is planned for App Store release in 2026.[3] The project grew out of Dyson's own study of Russian.

Plotflow

Plotflow (stylized PLOTFLOW; Japanese: プロットフロー) is an independent pen-plotter studio through which Dyson works as a generative artist. The studio produces Universal Century mobile suits — the mecha of the Gundam franchise — drawn in ink by machine and released as limited editions, signed and numbered; its website streams a live view of works being plotted, with running readouts of progress and ink drawn.[2] The studio connects the technical drawing Dyson first practiced in high school engineering courses with his later work in software: drawings are composed as code and executed by machine, one continuous line at a time.

worldView

worldView, an earlier project now maintained in a private repository, is a morning dashboard that distills high-level developments from around the globe, including markets and geopolitics, into a single daily view — an outgrowth of Dyson's undergraduate study of international business.[9]

Athletics

Dyson rowed for three years at the Saugatuck Rowing Club before being recruited to Ithaca College, where he was a four-year intercollegiate rower.[8][3]

He ran the Philadelphia Marathon in 2015 and completed it a second time in 2017.[6] In 2019 he finished the Ironman 70.3 Maine in Augusta — his first triathlon — in 5:57:24, moving up nearly 400 places in the field between the swim exit and the finish line.[5]

Views[edit]

Dyson has described his central interest as understanding beliefs — and, at their core, the psycholinguistic and environmental influences that shape them. His work in affective computing follows directly: Moodlog is built on the premise that the language people use about their own lives, read carefully, reveals emotional structure they may not see themselves.

His reading runs from the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series — he began with the volumes Computing and Free Will[10] — to the philosopher Byung-Chul Han, whose In the Swarm and Psychopolitics, critiques of digital communication and its psychological reach, he has cited as formative. He names the political scientist and anthropologist James C. Scott as his favorite author, and credits Vaclav Smil's Energy and Civilization with renewing his interest in the physics he had once studied.

Fiction has shaped him as well: he cites Howard Roark, the unyielding architect at the center of Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead. The earliest influences were televised — Morgan Freeman–narrated cosmology documentaries and the animated series Dino-Riders.

Personal life[edit]

Dyson lives in Boston, Massachusetts. A native English speaker, he speaks basic conversational Mandarin and is learning Russian.[3] He loves all animals, and dogs especially, which he has said represent the best side of humanity.

Wealth[edit]

Dyson has self-funded Moodlog under a freemium, revenue-first operating plan, foregoing venture capital.[3] His net worth has not been publicly estimated.
